There once was a disease that killed many,But, then big pink cured it with money.Oh, wait that’s not true,It still kills me and you.Does Brinker think me a big dummy?(I wrote this snarky limerick last year, but, thought it fit for today . . . Nancy Brinker is proving she is more about politics than women's health.
I wish I did not have to work today. I wish I did not have to work at all this week or next. Because if I didn’t have to work, I would spend every minute of my time responding to The Susan G. Komen Foundation’s latest and greatest (and by far their most transparent move ever): pulling the plug on funding to Planned Parenthood.
But, unfortunately I do have to work today. So here are a few links to former posts that shed a little light on what Komen is, in my opinion, and the opinion of many others . . . truly about. Also, please see below for what Breast Cancer Action says about Komen’s latest move and please, please, please sign their petition (you will find a link to it at the bottom of this post).
Please check these posts out:
An absolute MUST read: A post about where Komen’s money really goes by The Cancer Culture Chronicles: Komen by the Numbers (check out the pie chart on where SGK’s money goes . . . it is a real eye opener).
My post on how SGK abandons breast cancer patients during their time of greatest need. Another post of mine (simply because I like the title of it: When Pigs Fly)
Another post of mine about Nancy Brinker’s toxic perfume and her refusal to take it off the market after the toxic chemicals (chemicals linked to causing cancer) were made public by an independent lab who tested the “Promise Me” perfume.
And here is a post showing just how little of the purchase price of Komen’s Promise Me Perfume actually goes to ANYTHING by Katie Ford Hall at Uneasy Pink
And if you are interested in some poetry, here’s some of my Komen inspired poetry.
Like I said, I wish I had all day, all week, all month . . . I wish I had all year to spend on this nightmare of a fraud that Komen has become.
Please see what Breast Cancer Action has to say about Komen’s latest funding cut:
“Women’s healthcare is under assault once again. Susan G. Komen for the Cure is pulling all funding for Planned Parenthood, an outrageous decision that threatens women’s access to vital health services. But what’s particularly concerning is this funding cut will impact underserved communities most . . . Planned Parenthood provides vital health services including screening, clinical exams, referrals for ultrasounds and biopsies, and breast health education, often to women who do not otherwise have access to healthcare. One in 6 women of reproductive age get their healthcare through Planned Parenthood.
We believe all women should have access to the same healthcare. The care a woman receives should not be based on the type of insurance or financial resources that she has or does not have access to—or political agendas. Women’s health is women’s health, period . . . Organizations that are truly committed to women’s health must put women’s health before politics. We stand with Planned Parenthood in our shared commitment to putting women’s health first.”
Breast Cancer Action has a link (see below) where you can sign a petition demanding that SGK return the funding back to Planned Parenthood.
Please sign the petition. Please stand up, please let SGK know that they are WRONG.
All the best,
Lisa
Well, good luck concentrating at work! There is a lot going on isn’t there? I’ve been referring to it as a tidal wave. Komen sometimes is their own worst enemy. This time they’ve really done a number on themselves. Pulling the plug on Planned Parenthood is just simply disgraceful. I’m totally disgusted. Thanks for the links.
Hi Nancy,
Thank you for your comments. I completely agree. And, yes, it is difficult to concentrate on work today, hence my quick little break to write back 🙂
I hope the backlash will be enough of an eye opener that people will see through the pink facade.
I love your “tidal wave” description . . . I hope it rings true and that everyone learns to pull the plug on Komen and deliver donations to organizations that are NOT lining their own pockets and pinkwashing.
All the best to you my dear!

What do you think of us ‘Grumblers’ now, huh, Nancy B??
Nice one! EXACTLY what I was thinking . . . how dare she call those that her organization claims to serve “grumblers” . . . that Sac Bee spin piece (after several of us complained last year) was pathetic . . . I wonder how she will spin her way out of this one!
I am so bummed that I have work today and will be busy straight through Sunday (very busy work week). But, I will do my best to follow this nonsense and try to keep writing about it).
Thank you so much for your comment, I can’t wait to catch up on reading your blog and everyone else’s.
All the best in health,

Thank you, Lisa, for a comprehensive post with all these links. I like that you used the word “Fraud” to describe Komen. Because a fraud is what it is.
Hi Beth!
Thank you for your comment. I wanted to include more links, but, literally had to just cut and paste and get out the door as I had to teach a class and there was just no time. Not enough time anyway. There are so many excellent blogposts out there on the topic of Komen. I truly believe that they are a fraud. How can you claim to be “for the cure” if you only spend 2% of the money raised towards metastatic breast cancer research (that is, after all, the kind of breast cancer that kills). Isn’t that the one we need to CURE? I find them so disgusting.
Well, still have to work, so will have to wait until Sunday or Monday to return my snarky writings. I intend on holding them accountable. I have recently met someone who is very interested in SGK’s latest behavior and has contacts. So I think we might get somewhere.
All the best in health,
Lisa
I did a blog post, too, and so glad I wrote it. I had people come out of the woodwork to let me know how fed up they were with Komen. I was amazed by the support and felt a little less alone. By the way, hope you don’t mind, I may link to your post on how Komen failed to help you.
Thanks!

Oops, forgot the blog post: http://dinoiafamily.typepad.com/the_dinoia_family/2012/02/i-never-thought-id-blog.html
Hi Jen,
I am heading over to read your post right now! Thank you for sharing it!
Of course you can post my post on your blog . . . don’t need to ask.
When I first started being vocal about my criticism of Komen it was not easy. I live in Orange County (One of Komen’s largest chapters) and I lost friends over it. But, I am happy to say that since that time many, many people have told me they have the same feelings, concerns, criticisms etc. and it really has been nice to know that I am not alone.
We are many and we are strong.
Looking forward to reading your post!
All the best in health,
Lisa
Lisa,
I mentioned your blog and your post about not getting help from Komen in a follow-up post. Thank you again! I was concerned, but had yet another person last night say how wonderful it was that I spoke up; if only I’d done it sooner!

Jen,
Thank you for sharing my blog post on your blog!
I will comment on your blog post soon. We lost two women in the breast cancer community in two days: Rachel of The Cancer Culture Chronicles (her blog: http://cancerculturenow.blogspot.com/2012/02/rachel-cheetham-moro-1970-2012.html ) and Susan (on twitter as @whymommy and her blog: http://toddlerplanet.wordpress.com/2012/02/06/goodbye/ )
It is a very, very sad Monday.
thanks for a great post! With you 100%!
Thank you Kathleen!!!

Like 99% of the cancer industry Susan G. Komen is only interested in making money and living the good life. If you walked into the HQ of this scam or the ACS, with a cure that cost ten dollars, they would either try to buy you off or have you killed. They are about as interested in finding a cure as I am of getting cancer. You want to find a cure, how about, getting rid of all the carcinogenic cosmetics, food additives, chemicals and pesticides in our food products. Wake up, Cancer is big money and they don’t want their apple cart upset. Don’t give a dime to the overpaid management of these scams.
